HRS Prems vs Napier Tech: Draw 24 – 24

This game was played at Tech’s home ground Whitmore Park in fine conditions.

Our Premier team had the better of the first half and built a halftime lead of 14 – 5. We were winning the forward battle, although we lost our key lineout forward and lock Max Gomez to an ankle injury. Soon after halftime we scored a converted try to lead 21 – 5 and we seemed in control. However, Tech fought back and ceased on our mistakes to score twice and bring the score back to 21 – 17.

With five minutes to go we were awarded a penalty about 40 metres out which Oscar Sowman nailed it for a 24 – 17 lead. But Tech got back into our 22 and from a series of forward drives managed to score and convert the try for a 24 all final score. It was disappointing to see the match slip away.

The top six teams in this competition are very close in ability – hence the great scrap for top four positions. Players to shine for us were No 8 Emil Crichton who brings physicality and energy to the game. Jordan Thompson-Dunn had another dominant game at second five and loose prop Blake Tresidder had his usual solid game at loose head prop.

The competition points table remains tight after six rounds of the Maddison Trophy. Taradale & OB Marist are leading on 25 points. HRS remains 3rd on 21 points with Tech 20 & Havelock 19 and Pirates 17. Havelock & Tech have easy games left and should get 5 points each. So we need to win against Pirates with a bonus point to secure a semi-final place. Lets get to Elwood Park this Saturday and support our team!

POD Points: Emil Crichton 3 points, Jordan Thompson-Dunn 2, Blake Tresidder 1.

Point Scorers:  Kusi Drauna, JJ Lilo-Iosefo, Oscar Sowman tries. Oscar Sowman 3 Conversions & 1 penalty. Oscar has 161 points for the season.
